# Battery technology

Search window: **2026-09-07T05:50:57.633Z to 2026-09-10T05:50:57.633Z**, exactly 72 hours, with both endpoints included. The source review accepted three distinct findings.

## Fraunhofer ISE: thicker electrodes

Fraunhofer ISE reports that thicker electrode coatings increase energy stored per unit weight by 10–15%. The team tested small cells and made lithium-ion pouch prototypes on a semi-automated line.

- **Original source / source_url:** [Fraunhofer ISE release](https://www.ise.fraunhofer.de/en/press-media/press-releases/2026/more-energy-at-the-same-weight-fraunhofer-ise-optimizes-battery-cells.html). The merged candidate is this same URL.
- **Publication date as shown:** “September 09, 2026”; HTML `pubdate`: `2026-09-09T11:21:12.591+02:00`. This is **2026-09-09T09:21:12.591Z**. The review used the stated offset, not the last-modified field.
- **Supporting quote:** “the battery cells can store 10 to 15 percent more energy at the same weight.”
- **Limits:** These are lab and prototype results reported by the institute. The gain depends on cell chemistry and design. Larger-scale production, cost, and performance need further checks. The release does not establish commercial readiness.

## Aeson Power: sodium-ion auxiliary systems

Aeson Power says it is presenting sodium-ion systems for low-voltage auxiliary and backup power in electric and commercial vehicles. It also reports work with Xupai Group on systems for vehicle manufacturers.

- **Original source / source_url:** [Aeson Power announcement through PR Newswire](https://www.prnewswire.co.uk/news-releases/aeson-power-showcases-advanced-sodium-ion-auxiliary-battery-solutions-at-automechanika-frankfurt-2026-302873399.html).
- **Merged and related copy:** [EQS announcement](https://www.eqs-news.com/news/corporate/aeson-power-showcases-advanced-sodium-ion-auxiliary-battery-solutions-at-automechanika-frankfurt-2026/0c1d81c6-f2a0-464f-bf42-491f9c7542b6_en). Both copies count as one development.
- **Publication date as shown:** “09 Sep, 2026, 08:30 GMT,” below “News provided by Aeson Power.” GMT is UTC. With minute precision, the interval is **2026-09-09T08:30:00Z–2026-09-09T08:30:59.999999Z**. EQS shows a later distribution time: “09.09.2026 / 10:35 CET/CEST.”
- **Supporting quote:** “The company is also presenting sodium-ion auxiliary battery solutions for EVs and commercial vehicles”
- **Limits:** This is a company announcement at a trade show, with no independent test results for these systems. Existing starter-battery deliveries do not prove that the auxiliary systems are ready for production.

## Battery design: simulation-based selection

Qingbo Zhu and co-authors report a method to select battery designs for energy density, charging time, and aging. They used 1,427 accepted samples and checked selected designs again with the source physics models.

- **Original source / source_url:** [arXiv preprint](https://arxiv.org/abs/2609.07302), *Timescale-aware surrogate-assisted multi-objective optimization of battery cell design for energy density, fast charging, and degradation*. The merged candidate is this same URL.
- **Supporting original source:** [Version 1 full text](https://arxiv.org/html/2609.07302v1).
- **Publication date as shown:** “[v1] Mon, 7 Sep 2026 10:20:55 UTC,” in the submission history. This is **2026-09-07T10:20:55Z**, the first submission, not a later revision.
- **Supporting quote:** “Physics-based simulations of 1501 cell designs generate 1427 quality-controlled samples across 12 manufacturing-relevant parameters.”
- **Limits:** This preprint reports simulations, without independent physical-cell validation. Section 3.3 excludes lithium plating and assumes future battery management could suppress it. Predicted aging is therefore not a general forecast of commercial-cell life. Aging covers 200 cycles; energy density excludes packaging. The best gain in each metric comes from a different design.

## Date rules and excluded sources

The review used original publication fields, not modified dates. A possible publication interval had to fall wholly within the window. For a date without a time or stated timezone, the review allowed the full day across UTC−12:00 to UTC+14:00. A September 7 date then spans **2026-09-06T10:00:00Z–2026-09-08T11:59:59.999999Z** and cannot qualify. Recent releases about older papers were excluded when no separate new technical result was found.

- **[Princeton release](https://engineering.princeton.edu/news/2026/09/09/peering-matter-points-way-better-batteries):** Release JSON-LD `NewsArticle.datePublished` is `2026-09-09T22:19:15+00:00`, but the [original paper](https://advanced.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/aenm.71239) shows “First published: 12 July 2026.” No separate new technical result was found. The web tool first failed; direct public HTTP access then returned the release and metadata. The linked paper was opened and read.
- **[Nature Communications paper](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-026-77589-8):** Shows “Published: 07 September 2026.” JSON-LD `mainEntity.datePublished` is `2026-09-07T00:00:00Z`, before the window. If midnight is only a date placeholder, the full UTC day ends at `2026-09-07T23:59:59.999999Z` and still starts outside the window. Neither reading qualifies. The web tool had a redirect error; direct public HTTP access returned the page and metadata.
- **[LG Energy Solution release](https://inside.lgensol.com/en/2026/09/lg-energy-solution-and-seoul-national-university-open-the-door-to-commercializing-next-generation-lmr-batteries/):** Heading: “September 7. 2026”; dateline: “September 7, 2026.” No publication time or timezone was available. Its possible interval crosses the start boundary under the date-only rule above. A Seoul dateline does not establish the publication timezone. The web tool returned the text; direct HTTP metadata access returned 403. The page names a journal but gives no paper link.
- **[Forschungszentrum Jülich release](https://www.fz-juelich.de/en/imd/imd-4/news/announcements/carbonate-versus-hydroxide-based-precursors-for-synthesis-of-lithium-manganese-rich-cathodes):** Release JSON-LD `NewsArticle.datePublished` is `2026-09-07T12:49:27+00:00`. The [original paper](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/smsc.70370) shows “First published: 12 August 2026.” No separate new technical result was found. Both sources were opened and read.
- **[Cambridge department release](https://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/news/physical-pressure-could-make-ev-batteries-last-twice-long-and-reduce-environmental-impact):** Shows “Published: 07 Sep 2026”; HTML `article:published_time` is `Mon, 2026-09-07 00:00`, with no offset. Its date-only interval crosses the start boundary. The value `2026-09-07T11:04:39+01:00` is an updated/modified time and was not used. The [original Nature Energy paper](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41560-026-02087-6) shows “Published: 29 June 2026,” with JSON-LD `datePublished` of `2026-06-29T00:00:00Z`, before the window. The university homepage release link returned an internal error; the department release and original paper were readable.

## Coverage gaps and review status

- Only three English-language queries were run. The search was not exhaustive. Its eight-candidate limit left other relevant leads unselected. No new broad search was run during source review; unselected results remain unchecked.
- Search results included old pages, unrelated results, duplicate reports, and social media. Social media was not used as evidence or to select candidates. Stock-price changes, financial filings, and general market reports were not selected as technology developments.
- Search date filters use calendar days and cannot enforce the exact 72-hour window. September 7 releases needed checks against the 05:50:57.633 UTC start.
- **Later review resolved the search-stage gap for the eight selected candidates:** At collection, no source pages had been accessed, no candidate was confirmed in the window, and publication times, linked papers, and technical details were unchecked. Source review then opened or requested all eight URLs, read original text for all accepted findings, and retained three developments. Dates and older underlying papers prevented five findings. The access and date limits stated above remain.
- The search-stage record lists no failed searches or blocked pages. During review, some pages failed in one access tool but worked in another, as recorded above. PR Newswire and EQS text was readable through the web tool; a later direct HTTP request to PR Newswire returned 403.
- Reporting overlapped original releases. The review preferred original papers and lab, university, and company releases. It merged EQS with PR Newswire and counted no repeated report as a separate finding.
- Company and lab statements remain attributed claims. The review did not independently test cells or establish commercial readiness. The arXiv model's exclusion of lithium plating limits its aging claims even where modeled designs improve more than one metric.

These results describe the confirmed sources in this limited search. They do not establish that no other developments occurred.
